TALKS ARCHIVE 2025

The Women who built the Film Industry

This day school aims to introduce learners to the stories of some pioneering women from early cinema history who were hugely important to the development of the art, craft, and business of film, but who modern movie goers may not know. We’ll look at the unique challenges they faced as women in their times, their contributions – in some cases – deliberately overlooked, but also the immense possibilities of the emerging cinema industry. With a wealth of clips and background material.

Despite the classic image of the all-male cigar-chomping Hollywood moguls of yesteryear, many of the true early pioneers of the art and science of film were women. Actors, technicians, stunt performers, directors, writers, producers – even studio heads – they played a huge role in creating the most important global industry of the twentieth century, without ever getting their names on the door. We’ll take a look at a series of these important pioneering women from America and Europe; Actor Olive Borden; stunt performer Florence LaBadie; director Lois Weber; colourists Élizabeth and Marie-Berthe Thullier, and special effects pioneer Julienne Mathieu. No previous knowledge is required
