Kinema In The Woods and Tattershall Castle — 29th June 2017

Fifty members of the Cinema Club went to Tattershall Castle and Kinema in the Woods and, despite the weather, it was a great success. Most of the group visited the castle and many climbed to the roof, peering through the mist to try to see the various landmarks normally visible on a clear day. At least one person managed to make out Boston Stump, but Lincoln Cathedral was completely hidden. Although the café was closed because of bats in the roof, the staff were very busy with the coffee machine in the Gatehouse!
Members had time for lunch and a wander around Woodhall Spa before being greeted in Screen One of the Kinema by Philip Jones, the current owner, who told us about the cinema’s history. The Compton Kinestra organ, which was installed in the Kinema in 1987 from a disused cinema in London then rose from the stage. It is the only one left of 3 built with a console in an ornate oriental style and has a connected glockenspiel and piano on either side of the stage. The organist, Alan Underwood, played a wonderful medley of film theme tunes, while the lights on traditional screen curtains changed colour. We then enjoyed a Buster Keeton short film followed by The Purple Rose of Cairo, a Woody Allan film from the eighties but set in a cinema in American during the Depression.

Colour, Spectacle & Transatlantic Aspirations : The Post-war Melodramas of Michael Powell & Emeric Pressburger

Well, didn’t we have fun on the 1st August at the Education Event? Usually, it is held in the Thoresby College Great Hall but the relief caretaker forgot to turn up! But, never mind. Due to some quick thinking by Nick Sampson, the event was moved to the Friends’ Meeting House. Problem; the room was too small so, as it was a glorious, warm evening, with the help of a long extension lead and the speaker being a good sport, the screen and projector were set up in the yard and all was well. A particularly memorable evening for the thirty or so members present.

Festival of Angels at St Nicholas Chapel — 16th & 17th June 2012

Making of the Cinema Club’s Angel
I’m sure those of you who saw our Angel at the Festival will be amazed at the hard work that went into her construction.
“with her dark hair our angel also spoke of the dark side of angels, reflecting both humour and light as well as something more sinister”

You can watch a video showing some of the 81 angels on the EDP website
